The Evolution of Goals

Irrational Optimism Versus Crushing Pessimism

Chicago has finally decided to treat us to to a few nice weather days in a row.

Unsurprisingly, it coincides with my recommitment to Five Iron to begin creating content for Season Two of Carcosa Country Club.

Yes, Season One hasn’t launched yet but we are very close to the premier date. Someone will have to update that Facebook banner.

As I sit here alternating between Jon Sherman’s “The Four Foundations of Golf” and Erin Morgenstern’s “The Night Circus” on Audible, I find myself ready to share the evolution of my goals for the remainder of 2023.

The blisters from five sim rounds in less than 24 hours may have been inspirational.

My initial goal for Five Iron was to figure out my distances.

I hadn’t played in a decade plus and that was one time. Prior to that I hadn’t played regularly since the summer before freshman year of high school. So when I played two rounds for the first time in July 2022 and November 2022, I had no idea how far I could move the ball.

Perhaps after a month I pondered, would scratch be achievable at my age? Then, I was 37.

I briefly documented this thought process last month. Like a Greek tragedy, I discovered a certain podcast days later after wondering if I could achieve this holy grail for serious amateur golfers.

Other people were like me.

Weeks later, I came across The Grint Tour. A new goal started to materialize.

What if I win one of these events?

What if I play so much amateur golf I become known?

What if the other tour members fear me?

Now, I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.

An extended version of this though process will appear on a future Carcosa Country Club podcast episode.

Soon.
