A white flag?
A veiled mea culpa?
"I think life is about choices," he told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament. "Guys made choices to go and play LIV, guys made choices to stay here.
"I think it's hard to punish people. I don't think there should be a punishment.
"If people still have eligibility on this tour and they want to come back and play or you want to try and do something, let them come back.
"Obviously, I've changed my tune on that because I see where golf is and I see that having a diminished PGA Tour and having a diminished LIV Tour or anything else is bad for both parties," McIlroy added.
We’re giving him too much credit. It wasn’t an apology but an excuse to type mea culpa.
But, the dude sounds really defeated.
And, do we kind of feel sorry for him now?
Even after he recently suggested a world tour as a goal?
Perhaps, a bad performance this weekend in California will be the final straw that results in a public apology to the LIV guys. Unlikely if you saw the line he took off the tee at Spyglass on Thursday.
For now, let’s hope his words encourage the majors to let all LIV golfers back at full participation.
This would be an incredible opportunity for the PGA folks to be the bigger man. At some point, the PGA money will lose out to PIF funding. PIF will just create their own major events and new history, which is of course written by the victors.
Now, I must make a clear flip flop on YouTube golfer Grant Horvat.
For back story, the only YouTube golfer I watch is Pat Bonds, because he just plays. There’s no talking. It is just golf AMSR at courses like Tot Hill Farm, Tobacco Road, and Pine Needles.
You know, good courses that normal folks can actually play.
My age is showing but the Fat Perez’s and Good Good’s do nothing for me.
We are we interested in watching average golfers drink on the course?
How many different colored quarter zips and joggers can you wear while hitting a stinger?
Why are we watching mediocrity instead of playing? They aren’t professional athletes. They are above average golfers. None of those dudes would survive on a professional tour.
But, they are very popular, and that’s fine there are worse ways to spend your time, and my YouTube algo constantly throws their stuff onto my feed.
One day, I gave Grant a chance.
In a video from last year, Grant details how to shallow the club something I’ve been struggling with after a few folks pointed it out. No need to link the actual video, they don’t need the views.
This comment tugged at my heart strings:
This lesson literally changed my game. I’ve been playing for about a year and a half now and struggled hitting my irons consistent. I tend to chunk a lot of them too. What you said about comparing it to a baseball swing was the perfect analogy for it to click in my head on how to shallow the club. Went to the range today and flushed all of my irons for the first time ever. Thank bro I really appreciate the lesson!
Last night, I connected on 4 beautiful pitching wedges in a row at the simulator. Thanks to giving Grant a chance.
My Rory LIV moment had arrived.
Maybe Grant wasn’t so bad.
